@Mike3k: I think that it was a problem with the formatting. Not sure what, but I've given up, I think the entire hard drive is messed up, I can't connect it to any of the computers in the house - it just doesn't show up.

But it's ok. The only REALLY important thing on it was my music, which I'm now extracting from my ipod.</description>

How is the external hard drive formatted? OS X has some problems with NTFS formatting, in particular it can only mount it read only. Installing NTFS-3G with MacFUSE (which is automaticaly installed with Parallels Desktop) lets you read &#38; write NTFS volumes.</description>
