Well… sorta not really. But still, sorta new. Maybe I should start from the beginning…
I need a new computer. This one has is pushing 4 years, (I got it at the beginning of 6th grade) and despite what others have said, I don’t loathe it. It is slow and untrustworthy at times, and you can forget trying to run iTunes and Photoshop at the same time on it, but it has lasted this long and that’s what matters. And yes, I have a Dell PC.
About a year ago, after a particurally loud shouting session with my computer, and perhaps a particurally large check in my parent’s bank account, the idea was brought up that I might maybe possibly be able to perhaps get a new computer come Fall 2006. The keywords being “might,” “maybe,” “possibly” and “perhaps.”
But then the most horrible thing happened: You know, the most horrible thing to ever happen to geeks who are still under their parent’s roofs and who don’t pay for their own computers… My mom got root canal. The new computer was pulled away from under me like a rug. But I clung onto that rug. But then my dad took it and shook the dust out of it (aka he also got root canal… talk about bad luck) and I fell off of that rug.
But now, I have been able to cling back on. About a week ago my mom announced that I could probably (only one key word!) get a new computer around mid-July. WOOHOOO!!!!!! Great news, right? Wrong. You see, the certain computer that I really want is the popular Macbook. Great, right? Only trouble is that if I got it in July, there would most likely be a new version coming out around September and October meaning that I would have barely 2 months of “Apple happiness” before I was outdated. (See the Mac Buyer’s Guide for info on the Apple’s product cycles)
And considering that I would be probably be using this computer for the next 4 years, it meant that in my senior year of high school I would be 3 versions outdated instead of 2. And that’s not cool. I didn’t know if I should buy it in July when the “money would be available” or when the new one comes out. Plus, there was the whole thing with having to update the operating system when OS X Leopard comes out sometime later this year.
But today… Apple made up for the years of rapid product updates. They updated the Macbook. Nothing major, but enough to count as an update to the line on the Macbook Buyer’s Guide. The new ones automatically have a gig of memory now, and a faster processor. So now, I don’t feel bad because I’m (maybe) buying the Macbook in July, and I can (maybe) get a slightly better version because the prices haven’t changed. (”maybe,” of course because none of this is official yet.)

I’ve already got everything planned out for what’s going to (maybe) happen in July: The mid-level White Macbook, 2.16 GHz with 2GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. Final price? $1,549.00. Only $49 over the$1,500 price set by my parents. Mixed in with my own saved up money, I will be the happiest 14-year-old in the world come July (maybe.) That is, at least until the next version comes out next Spring. And the Spring after that. And the Spring after that. But the Apple critism is for another time. Right now I love them.
