Movie Review: Serenity - 5/5

Okay, here’s some background info: During the 2001/2 season of tv (I think) a tv show aired called firefly aired created by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayor, a very popular show. It was a bit of a flop. Critics didn’t like it and it didn’t get too many viewers, but there was still a lot of fans who just LOOOVED it. So after 24 episodes it was over. It was basically about a group of traveling people in 500 years who kinda fly around and are cool and funny and do some illegal stuff you know transporting stuff. It’s funny, action packed, special effects, but only a few, it was great. So when it flopped the fans and the creator Whedon got Universal to sponsor the movie. It came out in September-October 2005, around the time I was introduced to it for my birthday through the firefly series on dvd. The movie was called serenity, the name of the main character’s ship. I missed it in theaters and have been waiting for my turn on line for the dvd forever from netflix and I’ve finally gotten it!!!! So, to the movie:

The movie is great. It’s not a huge blockbuster movie, but not a little documentary. It’s just a really enjoyable and fun movie to watch. It makes you say “eewww” in some parts and “cool” in others, and laugh at others. The jokes are in the right places and each character has a place. You know, like a group and they each have characteristics and when they say things it’s just great. One example is when they’re robbing a vault and the security guard who’s supposed to keep it safe gave up. He and Mal (captain of ship) are talking while the others get the money:

Mal: “The leg is good. It has lots of bleeding and you’ll avoid damaging any unnesacary organs.”
Guard: “I was thinking of something more like a graze…”
Mal: “Nah, you don’t want them to think you gave up to easily…”
Guard: “I know that, but…”

It’s just great. There’s also some scary stuff in there and some drama, and action scenes that are just great. I highly reccommend that people see this. Especially families (kids 10 and up) because it’s lots of fun.
