Dell announced today that they will provide an option to have the easy-to-use Ubuntu Linux distribution pre-installed on some of their budget PCs due to an overwhelming number voting for it in “IdeaStorm,” which was basically a voting session held by Dell for what features users would like most to be added to Dell computers. Other major IdeaStorm contestants were Open Source programs like OpenOffice.org and Firefox being pre-installed.
And this seems like Dell is listening. True, Ubuntu will probably only be available on the really cheap computers that most people don’t buy, but the fact that Dell is willing to do this is a great step forward for Open Source software as a whole. All I can say is that Adobe and Microsoft are in big trouble – even Apple. Because you can’t beat free operating systems/software.
Note that this is not the first time Linux is being made available on Dell computers. They have provided the option to have other Linux distributions like Red Hat preinstalled since 1999. (See Dell’s blog) But partnering with Ubuntu brings Linux out even more to the general public, not just techies.
